The primary role of these impairment specific organisations is to provide sporting opportunities as well as offering advice and support - for some this is the whole pathway from grassroots to elite performance.

Partnership Working

Activity Alliance are the strategic lead for sport and physical activity for disabled people in England, working with partners to ensure that disabled people can lead active lives. Activity Alliance support Living Sport by offering expertise in a number of areas as well as enhance development links with partners such as National Disability Sport Organisations (NDSOs) and National Governing Bodies of Sport (NGBs). Activity Alliance also do research work and have published a number of useful guides and resources, many of which can be found in our advice and guidance pages.

Partnership Working

Some of the work we are doing with British Blind Sport includes supporting sports groups and clubs who work with people who are blind or partially sighted. In Cambridge City we have Cambridge Dons Goalball Club, VI Tennis, VI Cricket, VI Golf Sessions, VI Football with Cambridge United, Tamden cycling with Camsight and You Can Bike too, as well as Camsight Swimming and tenpin bowling sessions. There are also a number of Inclusive opportunities in the city for example with City of Cambridge Swimming Club and Cambridge & Coleridge Athletics Club. BBS also support the guide Runner database on their website and have their own activity finder.

Partnership Working

Some of the work we have been doing with UK Deaf Sport includes establishing a DEAFinitely Inclusive Network in Peterborough. Working in Partnership with Peterborough Deaf Drop in Group, Cambridgeshire Deaf Association and a number of sporting partners across the city, the network enabled Deaf people to be able to lead active lives in the city. With a £500 donation from British Sugar we were able to run an Effective Communication training course for a number of sports coaches to confidently deliver to deaf people. 6 members of the drop in group also ran the Anna’s Hope Fun Run at the Perkins Great Eastern Run 2015 and 2016 to raise money for the DEAFinitely Inclusive Network, after they have been support to take part in running training sessions with an interpreter to get ready for the 5km race.

Partnership Working

Cerebral Palsy Sport supports people with Cerebral Palsy to reach their sporting potential. Some of the work we have done with CP Sport includes promoting their Football development programme Kick Start and Kick off locally. Table Cricket community leagues are also supported in both Peterborough and Cambridgeshire. We have also started off the new Paralympic sport of RaceRunning in the county thanks to working together with local clubs and organisations. CP Sport also has Swimming development programme and a Junior development programme that we would love to support locally if there is interest.

Partnership Working

Mencap Sport and Special Olympics Great Britain work together to provide sporting opportunities for any one of any age and ability with a Learning Disability. Living Sport currently offer support to Special Olympics Peterborough with the work they do locally with a number of sports. Peterborough Special Olympics Network supports Swimming, Athletics, Equestrian, Gymnastics and Golf  groups as well a few individual athletes in other sports, these sports have year round training and competitions opportunities that link to Special Olympics pathway. The contact for the Peterborough group is Kay Greenaway.  We are keen to form a Cambridgeshire Special Olympics group so that there is a pathway of sport across the county for people with Learning Disabilities and would be happy to talk to anyone with an interest in this area and would like to find out more. 

Wheelpower

Partnership Working

Wheelpower is the home of British Wheelchair Sport, they run a number of events for anyone with a physical disability to have a go at wheelchair sports at Stoke Mandeville stadium which is their headquarters and the birth place of the Paralympics. Events include National Junior Games, Primary Sports Games, Junior Sports Camps, as well as inter spinal games for adults. Last year they ran their first Junior Games in Cambridge and will be back in November 2020 – get in touch for more details!

Limbpower are the newest NDSO and work with people with limb amputations and impairment, they primarily organise the Amputee Games and Junior Games to introduce new amputees to sporting opportunities.
