Students from the Martin Bacon Academy in Cambridge are taking part in the Superhero Series At Home Winter Wonderwheels to raise funds for Living Sport, by tackling the Ben Nevis Challenge at Clip ‘n Climb Cambridge. Superhero Series powered by Marvel is the UK’s one and only disability sport series and provides a fun way to keep active and connected through the colder months. Participants can climb, wheel, swim, push, pop, taste, touch and anything in between to clock up distance.

The Martin Bacon Academy is a brand new, state of the art Area Special School built in the heart of the Northstowe Learning Community. As a team, participating students at the Academy are aiming to climb the equivalent height of Ben Nevis up the Clip ‘n Climb walls over the course of five sessions. As the UK’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis stands at a mighty 1,344 metres.

Along the way, they are also ticking off famous landmarks that they have climbed the equivalent of. In the first session they climbed higher than the Empire State Building and in the second, the exact height of the Eiffel Tower. Ben Nevis and the landmarks have then been engaging topics to research back at school, to help really bring the challenge alive.

At the time of writing, the team has climbed 858 metres so are well on track to reach the summit of Ben Nevis and beyond, by the end of the challenge.

Chris Walthew, the owner of Clip ‘n Climb Cambridge, says, “It has been a pleasure to host the students. Despite, many being nervous at the start of their climbing, they have been so enthusiastic and determined to help reach the target. Over the sessions, they have really grown in confidence, and you can see how proud they are of what they have achieved on the climbing walls.

Sarah Mepham, Assistant Headteacher at the Martin Bacon Academy, says, “The sessions at Clip ‘n Climb have been a big milestone for Martin Bacon Academy, as the first educational experience offsite to take place for pupils since opening in April 2020. The students have thoroughly enjoyed themselves and enjoyed the challenges set and have had the opportunity to apply learning from the classroom into real life experiences. We couldn’t be any prouder.”
